I hope these thoughts give you something to ponder while you enjoy your morning beverage. As you go about your day, I invite you to take some time to reflect on your observations. Consider if there’s anything you can do to enhance your life, such as looking into the mirror and appreciating yourself. You may also find a way to make the world more beautiful with a simple act of kindness, like holding the door open without expecting a thank you. You may also want to consider if you have a gift to share with the world. Perhaps you have some untapped talent you may regret wasting, as we sometimes do with unused towels or our good china. I hope you find them enjoyable and return for more tomorrow.
Obstacles
I wanted to lighten things up a bit today. However, I also wanted to talk about obstacles.
So today, it is all about me. I am forever getting in my own way, becoming my largest obstacle. Procrastination has become my way of dealing with fear and overwhelm. Instead of tackling important tasks, I distract myself with things like playing computer games or organizing my drawers. As a new way of procrastinating, I channel my energy into blog writing.
Let me give you a little background. I cared for my grandfather for the last years of his life. I moved to his home to care for him, and for this, I was rewarded with his home full of his belongings. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate this gift. Since then, I have been working to make it feel like my home.
This is where a lot of overwhelm comes in. He lived in this house for over sixty years, so you can imagine the belongings left behind. My obstacle: letting go.
I have been making headway here and there. However, sentiment and not knowing how to move his things on to their new owners get in my way. Instead, I move things from one spot to another or just stand there and stare at them, waiting for them to tell me what to do next.
His old Polaroid, old bottles, old Readers Digest, and Time magazines just stare back at me and say what’s next? Do you want me to move to the left or right today? I stare at them like, “Don’t be silly! I can’t get to you today. The car is in the way.” Then there is this back-and-forth about the car. You know you can move the car out. What, move the car out of the garage? No, she’s a homebody like me. She doesn’t want to leave the garage. We have been having this same discussion for over a decade now.
Yes, I am my biggest obstacle. I am determined to take care of this this year, and then I can move on to the other garage in a few years.
Determination must replace fear and sentiment so that I can get out of my way.
Obstacles are oftentimes fear, masquerading as overwhelm. Determine if the obstacle that is in your way is real or made up. Either way, removing it will help you to start living your best life.
Today’s challenge:
Organize a closet.
